Naperville’s commitment to fostering global connections is evident through its active participation in international partnerships and cultural exchanges. These initiatives not only enrich our community’s cultural fabric but also open avenues for economic collaboration and mutual understanding.
Sister Cities Initiatives
Naperville has established sister city relationships with Nitra, Slovakia; Patzcuaro, Mexico; and Cancun, Mexico. These partnerships have led to various cultural and educational programs, including the creation of a monarch butterfly habitat garden in Knoch Knolls Park. This garden highlights the shared environmental connections between Naperville and regions in Mexico critical to the monarchs’ migration. Additionally, the annual Naperville Sister Cities International Festival showcases a vibrant mix of international and local cultures, offering attendees the opportunity to experience global traditions right in downtown Naperville.
Economic Collaboration
In May 2025, Naperville hosted over 60 participants from the Americas Competitiveness Exchange (ACE), bringing together key government and business representatives from Latin America, Canada, Europe, and the United States. This event aimed to explore economic collaboration and growth opportunities, focusing on industries such as life sciences, quantum computing, AI, clean energy, ag tech, and advanced manufacturing. Mayor Scott Wehrli expressed enthusiasm about sharing Naperville’s economic development story with the ACE delegates.
Cultural Exhibits and Community Partnerships
Through partnerships with local organizations like the DuPage Hispanic Alliance and the Naperville Public Library, Naperville Sister Cities has supported cultural exhibitions such as “Olmec Trails: Culture and Legacy.” This exhibition brought large-scale Mexican heritage sculptures to Naperville’s public spaces, fostering collaboration among arts, cultural, and city groups.
These initiatives reflect Naperville’s dedication to embracing global cultures and fostering international relationships, enriching our community’s cultural and economic landscape.
