Naperville’s commitment to fostering global connections is evident through its active participation in sister city relationships, international festivals, and economic collaborations. These initiatives not only enrich our community’s cultural fabric but also open avenues for economic growth and mutual understanding.
Sister Cities Initiatives
Naperville proudly maintains sister city relationships with Nitra, Slovakia; Patzcuaro, Mexico; and Cancun, Mexico. These partnerships have led to various cultural and educational exchanges, strengthening our ties with these international communities.
Monarch Butterfly Garden
In collaboration with the Naperville Park District, the Sister Cities Commission has established a monarch habitat garden at Knoch Knolls Park. This garden highlights the shared environmental connections between Naperville and regions in Mexico critical to the monarchs’ migration. The garden is planned to open in spring 2026.
Naperville Sister Cities International Festival
Scheduled for September 12, 2026, at Central Park, the Naperville Sister Cities International Festival celebrates our city’s global relationships. The event will feature live entertainment, international cuisine, cultural performances, and family-friendly activities, offering residents a chance to experience global traditions right in downtown Naperville.
Young Artists and Authors Showcase
In March 2026, the Sister Cities Commission and the Sister Cities Foundation hosted the Young Artists and Authors Showcase. The national theme for 2026 was “Voices of Today, Visions of Tomorrow.” Participants displayed their artwork at the Naperville Fine Art Center and Gallery, with Mayor Scott Wehrli recognizing their contributions. Winning entries advanced to the national showcase sponsored by Sister Cities International.
Economic Collaborations
In May 2025, Naperville had the honor of hosting over 60 participants from the Americas Competitiveness Exchange (ACE). This event brought together key government and business representatives from Latin America, Canada, Europe, and the United States to explore economic collaboration and growth opportunities. The visit highlighted Naperville’s strengths in industries such as life sciences, quantum computing, AI, clean energy, ag tech, and advanced manufacturing.
Mayor Scott Wehrli expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, “Naperville was thrilled to welcome ACE delegates to our city and share our economic development story.” This collaboration underscores Naperville’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that drive economic growth and innovation.
Through these initiatives, Naperville continues to embrace its role as a globally connected community, celebrating cultural diversity and pursuing economic opportunities that benefit all residents.
